Can I legally accept a drivers license and/or a social security card when I can plainly see it is a fake?

I work at an Apprenticeship, and the requirements for applicants is to have a valid drivers license and a valid social security card. MANY times I can plainly see that the identification is fake, however my "boss" tells me that we are not allowed to determine if an ID is fake or real...therefore we make a copy of it and move on as if its all ok and the ID is real. Is there ANY legal ramifications for accepting fake ID?
